Today my baby boy celebrated his first birthday!
I seriously cannot believe how fast this year has gone by! It seems like only yesterday I was marching the length and breadth of the hospital trying to get my contractions started, but that is a post for another day.
He’s gone from a teeny tiny 5lb 3oz baby to a great big 21lb 4oz toddler. He has basically quadrupled his birth weight in the last year. Not bad huh? Just so you can put this in perspective for you let me show you two pictures. The first was taken when he was about 6 days old after his feeding tube and cannula were taken out. The second I took yesterday. The sides of the ‘blanket’ are only about 20cm (8 inches) long!
We had a lovely day, starting with the obligatory gift opening. Obviously O was none the wiser that it was his birthday, but the kids were so excited! We had taken a trip to Tesco on Monday and they each chose a gift for him:
We also bought him some other wooden toys and a small paddling pool so I can contain our messy play now he’s more mobile!
After the kids had gone to school the three of us went to Asda to have breakfast:
I don’t have anymore photo’s but we still did plenty with our day. We went and bought a new car seat with his birthday money (he really didn’t need any more toys!) we also bought him his first ever stroller. It felt so weird walking without carrying a baby wrapped onto me while Dadi whizzed around like a big kid chasing seagulls! That’s a clue to what we did next, can you guess?
Yup! We went to the beach, well we looked at the beach, we actually had a stroll through the fair ground in Porthcawl and had fish and chips for lunch.
After going home exhausted from all driving in the heat we could happily have hidden in the shade for the rest of the day. But we didn’t. We went back out to have McDonalds and an icecream when the kids came home from school just so they didn’t feel left out! I think tomorrow will have to be an extra veggies day to make up for it 😉
So there was no cake smash, no big party and the gift pile wasn’t towering. But O had a lovely day and got spoilt rotten with hugs and kisses and more gifts than he knows what to do with at the moment!
Okay, you twisted my arm, here is one last photo. It was taken the first time we saw him after he’d been whisked off to SCBU. He was about two hours old. I can never get over how bright his eyes are!
So that was O’s first birthday. He loves all his new toys and has happily thrown them around the living room all evening! How did you celebrate your children’s first birthdays. Did you go all out? Or did you do a more low key affair?
