Last weekend I wrote this post about wanting to lose all the extra weight I have gained since I gave birth 14 months ago. I also mentioned that I have never really been successful at any diets I have attempted in the past. I have to be honest that these attempts have been few and far between and have never lasted more than a few weeks.
One of the things that really make it hard for me is my lack of maths skills. Seriously, even just counting sometimes flummoxes me, we recently took cash out of the bank to buy a van for Lee and it took me seven attempts to count 100 £10 notes! So calorie counting is one thing that my brain simply cannot do.
A few weeks ago I was asked if I’d like to try out the Noom Weight App. It is available on android and ios and is this great app that tracks your food intake and exercise. The Android and IPhone 5s versions also count your steps too, but the best thing is that it does all the hard work for you! All you need to do is programme in your age, starting weight, goal weight and whether you want to lose weight fast or slowly then it tells you how many calories you should aim for per day.
All you need to do is know what you ate and roughly how much and log it in. The Noom Weight app remembers what foods you usually log, say, for breakfast. Or what foods you often have together, like toast with butter, eggs or jam. It will also remember what quantity you had last so if you always have 3 crumpets you can quickly swipe across to log it.
There are loads of foods programmed into the app and not just basics either. There are even foods from popular restaurants and fast food places too. Just start typing and you will usually find what you need. If you can’t find a particular meal or food stuffs you can break it down to the individual ingredients or choose a similar food from a different brand.
To choose portion sizes you simply press on the item and it will bring up a menu where you can pick how much you ate. If you can’t find the amount in the quick options or you know exactly how many calories you ate you can press the ‘more’ button that will bring up other amounts and ways to log your food, by weight etc.
The app encourages you to log every single one of your meals and snacks, I am currently at 76! Once you get into double digits it kind of gets addictive. It really makes you accountable to what you are eating. I have actually opted not to eat a particular food or snack, purely because I know I have to log it and have gone for a healthier option.
There is also a place to log your exercise. Again there is a huge list from walking to cross country skiing and everything in between. Did you know 35 minutes of low intensity housework will burn 110 calories or the same time doing a high intensity Insanity workout will burn 576. So it’s nice to know that even if you don’t get time to actually workout you can still burn off some of those shortbread biscuits you snacked on!
Just so I was able to do a full review I was given a years subscription to Noom Pro. Pro gives you access to the groups. It did take me about 4 or 5 attempts to find an active group but I think they are a relatively new addition so hopefully it will be easier to find a group when they are more established.
The group I am in now is great! They are all very encouraging of each other and the chat always has one or two comments every time I log on. There is mix of men and women and all ages so its a good for getting other people perspectives on things. With the groups too, you have the ability to remind other members to log their meals if they seem to have forgotten or to high five them when do. It’s always good to get a little nudge sometimes 🙂
So far I have only managed to loose 2lb this week, but until last week I hadn’t been doing much exercise at all. So I’m hoping now the kids are all back in school I will be able to do a lot more, which might mean I’ll loose steadily from now on! I promise to keep you all updated with my progress 🙂
What I love about the Noom Weight App is that it isn’t just a diet aid and exercise tracker. It actually helps you change the way you approach your eating habits. It also gives you little positive messages along the way. This one has to be one of my favourites:
Have you ever needed to loose weight? What method do you find helps you the most? Do you think the Noom Weight App might be a good fit for you?
***Disclaimer:I was given a one year subscription to Noom Pro but all thoughts and opinions are honest and my own***
