In the 13 years since we started having kids I have come to accept that my house is not going to look anywhere near perfect, or even just tidy, until they have all left home. But saying that if the state of my own bedroom as a child is anything to go by, possibly not even then!
Between the seven of us, the masses of ‘stuff’ that we own, alongside our generally untidy habits mess is completely unavoidable. I hold my hand up here to say that I have never been the best of housewives, I’d much rather play with the kids and well, make messes, than do the dishes or put away clothes!
When the older four are in school I can get our living room into a vaguely tidy space but as soon as they walk though the door we have school bags and shoes strewn all over the place before they even get in a hello!
More often than not, come tea time my beautiful dining table:
looks more like this, or worse:
But looking back through the masses of old photos I have piled up in boxes around the house, or in folders on the computer, it seems that having five kids isn’t really any more of an excuse as having two – having had twins first I can’t say whether one child is less messy, but I doubt it! We really do seem to be the house of perpetual mess!
Of course we have the food mess:
The post toddler tea party mess:
And the general throw everything on the floor because you can mess:
Then you have the creative mess:
And the Christmas mess:
But then there was the talcum powder incident of ’03:
It wasn’t hard to find the culprits!
But luckily I still have a small person willing to help clean up at the end of the day:
How about you? Is your house always full of messes too?
