Picture the scene. It’s Sunday night. The kids are all bathed and are finally sleeping in their beds. You are just settling down with a cuppa to watch a bit of TV when you get this nagging feeling that you’ve forgotten something.
Nope. You have a miniature garden, complete with tiny vegetables and an Anderson shelter drying against the radiator.
No, not that. All done and reading log filled in.
The radiator. Hmm, there’s something missing!?!
THE SCHOOL UNIFORM!!!!!!!!!
Cue running around dragging articles of clothing out from under beds and from down the back of the overflowing washing baskets.
And this, my lovely readers, has been my Sunday nights for the decade I have had kids in school! We are a little more organised (and I use that word VERY lightly) now in as much as the kids are older and find their own uniforms during the bedlam that is bath and bed time. But it’s still always done in a rush on a Sunday night, even if they have been off for a week for half term!
I know I’m not alone in this Sunday night ritual. I’ve spoken to many parents who are exactly the same.
I have also spoken to mums who have everything washed, dried and ironed before the kids are even in bed on the Friday!
But why are there two distinct camps? I wonder what sets us apart?
Are us sunday washers the ones that when we were still in school left our homework right until the last day before it needed to be submitted? And those who are practically putting their child in the machine along with the uniform in their haste to get it washed the good girls and boys who did their homework the day they got it?
Perhaps there is some subconscious correlation and it actually says more about the people we are (other than mildly disorganised)? I know I am always doing things last lap and seem to do a better job if I’m working to a tighter deadline. But that could just be me, and then again, maybe I’m just grasping at straws to cover up my inability to get some organisation in my laundry routine?
All I can say is thank goodness for the invention of extra fast washes and tumble driers! These didn’t exist in my life for many a Sunday night school uniform scramble and I for one am truly indebted to the inventor of both!
So what camp are you in? Are you in with the Sunday washers like me? Or are you a Friday night kinda guy (or gal!)?
